2021 General Assembly Membership Meeting Minutes
Nominees to Open Executive Positions
Treasurer’s Report
The Society for Socialist Studies has weathered another year without a face-to-face conference, but with significant online panel activity and growth in the Society’s new chapters and affiliates programmes. While we are strengthened by these new activities, we also miss the regular in-person conference and look forward to re-launching it at York University, Toronto, in 2023.
While the executive and programme committee initially planned an online conference format this spring, we opted instead to run a zoom panel series open to the public to showcase presenters and encourage interaction with activists. As in the previous two years, the loss of Congress fees and membership revenue has been largely offset by reduced operation costs. While we are pleased with the growth of our non-Congress organizing, our experiences have confirmed the enduring value of the Congress-based conference to the life of the organization.
This year’s GAMM will feature the usual reports from our executive officers and the presentation of our annual budget and financial report. The Society will also hold elections for many of its executive posts, and the executive will propose a constitutional amendment establishing an events secretary, separate from the membership secretary. We will want to think carefully about our programme preparations for York 2023, since we anticipate the venue and the return to face-to-face could make for a very dynamic and hopeful rebound. We look forward to a presentation at the GAMM from the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences. And the book prize committee will announce the annual Errol Sharpe book prize winner. We will also have time for a post-meeting chat as usual after adjournment.
To attend the GAMM, members must have paid their dues for the year 2022 at least 72 hours before the June 17 meeting (to pay dues or to make a donation, click here).
They must also register online (to register, click here). For an overview of the steps to attend the GAMM electronically, click here.
As we approach the GAMM, please see the meeting information page of the website to review technical information on accessing the meeting as well as for more information on the programme of plenary events that we are holding in lieu of a regular Congress, see the events programme *here* (link to programme).
In solidarity,
Radhika Desai, President
Jamie Lawson, Secretary
Megan Aiken, Membership Secretary

Society for Socialist Studies Executive Committee: 2022 Call for Nominations
The following executive positions are open for election (or may be open: in the case of the Events Secretary, election is dependent on an earlier constitutional amendment) at the Socialist Studies GAMM 2022.
Nominees are welcome in advance or on the virtual floor of the meeting itself.
All nominees must be SSS members in good standing at the time of the meeting.
Advance nominations are particularly welcome, to provide the voting membership with bios, and to allow time for verification of paid-up membership. To nominate yourself or someone else, please write to Jamie Lawson (Secretary) at lawsonj@uvic.ca AND to Megan Aiken at membershipsocialiststudies@gmail.com. Sending to us both helps to simplify the posting process and the membership verification process.
Include in the email or an attachment the nominee’s full name, a contact email address, a short statement of about 100-150 words, including biography, skills, affiliations, and/or experience, and whatever the nominee would like to share about serving on the executive.
Advance nominations of other members than yourself should provide some indication (such as an attached letter or email) of the nominee’s willingness to stand.
If our records show that the nominee needs an updated membership before the meeting, we will reach out to the nominee to resolve the problem.
Roles to fill:
President
Treasurer
Membership Secretary
(Events Secretary, if Constitutional Amendment passes under Item 9, above)
Members-at-Large (3)
Student/Youth Representatives (2)
Activist Scholars Representatives (2)
