The Society for Socialist Studies is releasing two open letters addressed to the Board of Governors at McGill University (where the Society is planning to hold its annual conference in June) and the Board of Directors of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences.
One calls for solidarity with the encampment on McGill University campus, which is demanding the university disclose its financial investments in Israel, divest from said holdings, protect students who have supported Palestinian human rights, and publicly condemn the genocide of Palestinians.
The letter continues: “The Society for Socialist Studies will look into alternative venues for our conference and encourage other associations to do the same, should McGill use police to displace the divestment encampment.”

The second letter is written in support of the Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL), which is the certified bargaining agent of the tenure-track and tenured faculty of McGill’s Faculty of Law and has been bargaining with the University now for more than 18 months.
Between April 9 and 11, AMPL held a strike vote in which more than 95% of colleagues participated and more than three-quarters voted to commence a strike of unlimited duration on 24 April 2024 if there is not an agreement in principle.
As the letter states: “The Society for Socialist Studies will look into alternative venues for our conference and encourage other associations to do the same, should AMPL remain in an active picket at the time of Congress.”
