The Society for Socialist Studies General Assembly Membership Meeting (GAMM) for 2023 will take place during Congress of the Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences at York University, Toronto. This is the Society’s annual general meeting, and for the first time in several years, we will hold it face-to-face.
The executive salutes the Society’s 2023 conference programme committee, which Megan Aiken chairs. As just one of the conference highlights, our shared plenary with CASID, featuring Dr Robtel Neajai Pailey, will follow our annual meeting.
Day: May 29, 2023
Time: 1:30-3:00 pm Eastern
Location: Founders College (FC), Room 203, York University, Toronto, Ontario
Further documents for the GAMM will be uploaded as they become available.
Preview of Agenda:
This year’s GAMM will feature reports from our executive officers and the presentation of our annual budget and financial report.
The executive will also present several constitutional amendments and resolutions for discussion. These arise from legal requirements connected to the relocation of the Society’s credit union account, and from business arising from the events of the past year. Members can find them with other GAMM documents under the year 2023 at the “Congress and GAMM” tab at our website (https://www.socialiststudies.ca).
After discussion at the GAMM, these constitutional motions (with any amendments) will be voted on at a separate general meeting to be held in Fall 2023.
The Society will also hold elections for several executive posts at the GAMM, including president, secretary, and membership secretary. (We will also be seeking volunteers for the 2024 Conference Programme Committee.) For the full list of open executive posts, see below, under “Society for Socialist Studies Executive Committee: 2023 Call for Nominations.”
Executive nominations can happen from the floor of the meeting. However, where possible, we encourage nominations in advance of the meeting, to make available as many profiles of nominees as possible.
To nominate yourself or someone else to a position in advance and present the nominee in print to voting members, follow the simple advance nomination process under the Call for Nominations, below. We will post submitted profiles of advance nominees as we receive them. The Call for Nominations document and advance profiles will also be at the “Congress and GAMM” tab at our website (see paragraph above).
Paid-Up Membership as a Condition for Participation:
To attend the GAMM, members must have paid their dues for the year 2023. To pay dues or to make a donation in advance of Congress, click here (https://forum.federationhss.ca/?lid=TNJ5B-ATKFF-WRAGS&pkClient=33). To verify your membership status at Congress before the GAMM (and to pay any outstanding dues), please come to the SSS welcome desk during business hours, located at Founders College (FC), Room 201.
As we approach the GAMM, please see the meeting information page of the website (https://socialiststudies.ca/2023-toronto/) to review pre-posted documents, including advanced nomination profiles for executive positions.
We join with the rest of the executive in welcoming you to our meeting and conference at York University!
– In solidarity, Jamie Lawson, Secretary (email@example.com) with Megan Aiken, Programme Chair 2023; and Cheryl Hewitt, Treasurer.
Society for Socialist Studies Executive Committee: 2023 Call for Nominations
The following executive positions are open for election at the Society for Socialist Studies GAMM 2023, held face-to-face at Congress. Section 7 of the SSS constitution describes the responsibilities of all the executive positions (see https://socialiststudies.ca/about/constitution/).
Nominees are welcome in advance or on the floor of the meeting itself.
Advance nominations are particularly welcome, to provide the voting membership with bios, and to allow time for verification of paid-up membership. To nominate yourself or someone else, please write to Jamie Lawson (Secretary) at firstname.lastname@example.org AND to Megan Aiken (Programme Committee Chair) at email@example.com. Sending to us both helps to simplify the posting process and the membership verification process.
Include in the email or an attachment the nominee’s full name; a contact email address for the nominee; and a short statement of about 100-150 words. That statement could include biography, skills, affiliations, experience, and whatever the nominee would like to share about serving on the executive.
Advance nominations of members other than the email sender should also provide some indication (such as an attached letter or email) of the nominee’s willingness to stand.
Members of the executive must be members in good standing at the time of election and during their term. To pay dues in advance of Congress, see If our records show that an advance nominee needs an updated membership before the meeting, we will reach out to the nominee to resolve the problem.
