Dear friends,

In step with the ancient Chinese proverb, we live in interesting times.  Looming environmental crisis, yet another economic collapse, ever-widening economic inequalities, a new right and a new imperialism, the commodification of everything under the sun, a scientific and technological revolution of great scope, and amid it all, tenacious social movements striving for justice and ecological sanity.  As you may know, the Society for Socialist Studies has since 1967 been the main academic society for intellectuals and activists in Canada who see themselves in alignment with those critical social movements.

In 2005, the Society launched Socialist Studies: The Journal of the Society for Socialist Studies. Our journal is interdisciplinary, and is committed to publishing articles conveying a critical perspective that will shed light on, and offer remedies for, any form of social, economic or political injustice. The current issue and all past issues are available online through this site.

We would like to invite you to join the Society for Socialist Studies (SSS).  We know that the Society would benefit greatly from having you on board, and we think you will find the group (which currently numbers over 350, coast-to-coast) to be both convivial and stimulating.  Included in your membership will be notifications of new issues of the journal, updates on our annual conference held in conjunction with the Congress for the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and an invitation to participate in the Congress.  Information on how to join the Society is available on our website under the section entitled ‘Membership and Subscription’.

We are sure you agree that in these interesting times a group committed to advancing the cause of social justice and ecological health deserves all the support it can muster.  Please consider joining the SSS, and also spread word of the organization to friends and associates who you think may be interested.  We are keen to build the Society into a vibrant network for progressive intellectuals and activists.  And, if you have an article that you think might fit within the new journal, please contact the Editors, Elaine Coburn <coburn@stanfordalumni.org> and Chad D. Thompson <chad.d.thompson@gmail.com>.
