The
Department of Political Science at Concordia University with the
support from the Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship
at McGill University is proud to announce its 2009 Workshop
Series on Social Research (WSSR)
that will be held from May 12th to May 16th.
This
year the WSSR offers three distinct workshops:
1. Qualitative Research: Focus groups in
Theory and Practice
This
workshop offers an overview of techniques and tricks on how to conduct
qualitative research through focus groups and semi-structured interviews.
Instructor:
Sébastien Dallaire (The Strategic Counsel)
Sébastien
Dallaire, Senior Associate at The Strategic Counsel, possesses
extensive experience in designing, implementing and reporting on
qualitative research, with a particular emphasis on matters related
to Canadian public policy. Before starting his career in
market research in 2005, Sébastien was a course instructor in research
methods at the Department of Political Science of the University of Toronto.

2. Basics of Multivariate Analysis: OLS and
Logistic Regression
This
workshop offers a review of the basics in multivariate analysis including
OLS and logistic regression. This workshop will cover both the
mathematical foundations and uses of these techniques.
Instructor:
Thomas Scotto (University of Essex)
Thomas
J. Scotto is a Lecturer in the Department of Government at the University
of Essex in the United Kingdom. He teaches undergraduate and
postgraduate courses in research design, quantitative analysis, public
opinion, and American politics. Additionally, he teaches the
Introduction to Regression course at the Essex Summer School in Social
Data Analysis and Collection. Dr. Scotto's articles have appeared in
the Journal of Politics and Electoral Studies and his recent co-authored
book, Making Political Choices: Canada and the United States has
been published by the University of Toronto Press.

3. Multivariate Modeling: Discrete Choice,
Multi-level Analysis & Structural Equations
This
workshop offers an overview of various advanced techniques in statistical
analysis and social research including discrete
choice modeling, multi-level analysis and structural equations modeling.
Instructor:
Harold Clarke, Ashbell Smith Professor (University of Texas at Dallas)
Professor
Clarke is editor-in-chief of Electoral Studies, has been a principal
investigator on several election studies teams, both in Canada and the UK,
and is the author of many books including Political Choice in Britain,
Absent Mandate, Polity on the Edge: Canada and the Politics of
Fragmentation.

l’appui financier du Centre pour l’étude de la citoyenneté démocratique

atelier offre un survol des techniques et astuces de la recherche
qualitative telles que les « focus groups » et les

Counsel, possède une riche expérience dans la pratique de la
recherche qualitative (design, mise en œuvre et présentation) axée sur
les enjeux portant sur les politiques publiques au Canada. Avant de se
joindre au Strategic Counsel Sébastien
a enseigné les méthodes de recherche au département de science
politique de l’Université de Toronto.
